On the 14th of March 2023, a new agreement between Spain and the United Kingdom was approved whereby the exchange of a UK driving licence to a Spanish one is now possible without the need to take a practical or theory test.

This is fantastic news for British citizens who have just obtained Spanish residency and for those thinking of applying but having been put off doing so up until now due to having to do these tests. It is also great for all existing residents in Spain who were not able to exchange their UK driving licences before Brexit, as the Spanish authorities have granted a further six-month period from the 16th of March to make the change.

If you are considering moving to Spain, it is important to note that your UK driving licence is only valid for 6 months from the date you obtain residency in Spain; after which, the exchange is necessary. Traffic offence information is also interchanged between countries.
